Guided walks

This walk starts from the layby oposite the caravan park in Westgate in Weardale on the A689. The guide will be there from 9:30. The guide will provide whatever clothing and boots have been pre ordered. We will walk along the Middlehope burn gorge to an area of lead mine workings where some of the best preserved buildings and features can still be seen. The guide will describe the features and bring the history of the area to life dating back to the 14th century. We will continue allong the valley where more of the workings can be seen to a drift mine entrance where we can look along the addit. Back tracking to a track that takes us up to a road we will see a site of special scientific interest, a disused quary that has opened up the geology so that the lead vein and surrounding Quartz can be clearly seen. Continuing along to a track we will climb to a road and cross the top of Middlehope beck. We will walk down the west side of the beck returning to Westgate and the start point. The walk is about 6 miles in length. Some of the route can be muddy in poor weather.

Dogs on a lead are welcome on all of the walks
